Fall is here in Batavia, NY, which means winter weather will be arriving before we know it. Now is the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is in top shape and ready to handle the cold months ahead. These are a few of the most important tips to get your car ready for winter:
1. Check Tire Pressure and Tread Depth
Proper tire inflation is critical for good traction, even tread wear, and optimal gas mileage. Check that all four tires are inflated to the PSI indicated on the driver's side door jamb. While you're at it, don't forget to check the spare tire too. Inspect tire tread depth—if it's below 4/32", it's time for new tires.
2. Replace Wiper Blades and Top Off Washer Fluid
Visibility is crucial during fall and winter precipitation. If your wiper blades are leaving streaks or missing portions of the windshield, replace them with a new set. Fill the washer reservoir with a winter blend washer fluid that won't freeze.
3. Get an Oil Change and Check/Top Off Fluids
If you're due for an oil change based on your regular maintenance schedule, take care of that before winter hits. While you're at it, have your technician check your brake, transmission, power steering, and coolant fluids and top them off as needed.
4. Put Together a Winter Emergency Kit
Be prepared for anything by keeping a winter emergency kit in your car. Recommended items include a blanket, flashlight with extra batteries, first-aid kit, snacks, water, warm gloves, ice scraper, and jumper cables.
