According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fatalities on the road are going down for most groups... except pedestrians. Rather than getting safer, like the occupants of cars, pickups, and SUVs, the danger to foot-traffic is increasing.

That's why the NHTSA launched the #EveryoneIsAPedestrian campaign on Twitter, to remind drivers to:

  • Always look for pedestrians
  • Always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk
  • Follow speed limits and slow down in school zones and communities with children

The agency also reminds pedestrians to practice safety when crossing the street. Just like The Beatles on the cover of Abbey Road:

  • Put away electronic devices
  • Use the crosswalk
  • Wait for the walk signal
  • Never assume a driver sees you

Not everybody drives, but everyone is a pedestrian, so it's important to share the road and stay safe. Another important safety tip for drivers is to make sure your vehicle -- especially your brakes -- are in good repair. If your brakes are feeling mushy lately, make a service appointment with Pellegrino Auto Sales in Batavia.
