Cars and winter aren't especially good friends. Frigid temperatures like the ones we feel here in Batavia can make it more difficult for your car to run properly. That's why we highly encourage coming to our service center to winterize your vehicle so that you can reduce the risk of your car failing to start because of the cold.

So, what happens if the weather gets the better of your vehicle and you find yourself unable to start your engine on a frosty morning in Albion? Well, there are a few things that can cause your car to fail its startup, so there are a variety of ways to go about getting your vehicle going.

Reasons Why Your Car Might Not Start

Knowing why your car might have trouble starting is half the battle. Here are a few of the most common issues that you might run into in the Buffalo area:

  1. Battery is too cold or too weak to generate the power it needs to start your engine
  2. Oil has trouble flowing due to being too cold
  3. Ice blockage in your car's fuel lines

What to Do When Your Car Doesn't Start

1.) Turn off all electrical accessories

Things like your heater, radio, and headlights eat up battery power. Turning these items off before attempting to start your vehicle will allow your car to devote more of its battery power to starting the engine. When you get your car running, let it go for a few minutes before you turn on anything else.

2.) Check your battery

Make sure your battery is clean and check the cables to make sure they're tight. If you notice any signs of corrosion, you can clean them away to help your battery work better. Disconnect the battery (negative first) and use protective gear like gloves and goggles as you scrub away with baking soda and water. When you're done, reconnect the battery (negative last).

3.) Check oil levels

Low oil might cause your car to struggle with starting. Check your oil levels and refill as needed.

4.) Jump start

When all else fails, you can jump start your vehicle with the help of another driver with a running car and some jump cables.
