Tips for Teen Drivers

Because car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the U.S., having a teen driver can be an exciting, yet scary, time for parents. But you can ease your mind a bit by discussing and practicing safe driving techniques with your child.

Discuss these tips with your teen to get them started on the safe driving path:

  • Limit the amount of friends they can have in the car at one time. Teens are more likely to engage is dangerous behavior, like speeding, when driving with peers.
  • Limit nighttime driving.
  • Set a good example for your teen driver. If you aren't practicing what you preach your teen probably won't take you seriously. Obey the speed limit, don't text and drive, and don't drink and drive.
  • Share the car with your teen instead of buying them their own car. Studies show that teens are more likely to speed if they have their own car.
